Anthony J. Annucci was named the Acting Commissioner of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision on May 1, 2013. Prior to that, he served as the Executive Deputy Commissioner since October 2007.

As the Acting Commissioner, Mr. Annucci oversees an agency with 44 correctional facilities, approximately 30,500 incarcerated individuals, 27,000 parolees, and 26,000 staff. The combined annual capital and operations budget for the Department is approximately $3.47 billion.

In addition to the successful implementation of comprehensive new laws such as HALT and Less Is More, he also devotes time and attention to the Department's use of evidence-based programs designed to reduce recidivism through reliance on the risk, needs and responsivity model. He is also spearheading a renewed emphasis on educational, vocational and job training opportunities for incarcerated individuals, as well as community re-entry initiatives, to ensure a smooth transition upon their release to supervision. In addition, he guides efforts in achieving system-wide accreditation by the American Correctional Association, as well as compliance with the national Prison Rape Elimination Act, while also focusing on the safety of staff, incarcerated individuals, and parolees. 

Among his many duties as Executive Deputy Commissioner was serving as the agency contact for the New York State Legislature, the Department liaison with the Permanent Sentencing Commission, and the Acting Extradition Secretary to the Governor. Mr. Annucci also negotiated and implemented new programming for the treatment of mentally ill individuals incarcerated. 

He joined the Department in 1984 as Deputy Counsel and was promoted to Deputy Commissioner and Counsel in 1989. In his 37-plus years at DOCCS, Mr. Annucci has drafted legislation that has been signed into law by five different governors. He wrote and carried out new laws pertaining to Limited Credit Time Allowance and Merit Time, and the original Shock Incarceration law, which saved taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. He has long been a leader in sentencing reform and correctional program legislation, helping to draft and implement legislation ranging from parole supervision sentences to Jenna's Law, as well as contributing to the Rockefeller Drug Law Amendments.

Mr. Annucci is a member of the American Correctional Association and the Association of the State Correctional Administrators, and is a regular lecturer on topics, such as prison operations and sentencing laws. He has twice been recognized by the New York State Bar Association; once for Outstanding Contribution in the Field of Correction and the other for Excellence in Public Service. More recently, he received the 2021 Michael Franke Career Achievement Award from the Correctional Leaders Association, a national organization whose membership is made up of every state's corrections head.

He earned his B.S in Psychology at Fordham University, his M.A. in Criminal Justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and his Juris Doctor at Brooklyn Law School.

He grew up in Brooklyn, is married, and is an accomplished pianist.
